The Costa Rica’s melon and watermelon export season officially got underway and will run through April, marking one of the most important periods for the country’s fresh fruit export sector

Based on the most recent consolidated official data, Costa Rica exports approximately 100,000 metric tons annually of these two fruits, with an export value close to US$60 million, primarily destined for the United States and Europe,including The Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Italy.

Costa Rica mainly exports Cantaloupe, Honeydew, and Galia melons,which are recognized for their sweetness, firmness, and shelf life. Watermelon exports include both traditional seeded varieties and seedless types,with growing demand from retail chains across Europe and North America.

Production is largely concentrated in the North Pacific region, where dry-season conditions support high-quality fruit and efficient logistics. For the 2026 season, exporters expect to maintain competitive volumes, supported by strict phytosanitary standards, traceability, and sustainable agricultural practices.
